Super Bowl XLVI: By the Numbers

6th
Feb 2012

It’s said often, but the Super Bowl really is an annual sporting event unlike any other. Here are just a few quick stats about how utterly massive the NFL finale really was.

Cost of a 30-second commercial: $3.5 million

The $3.5 million price-tag is a new record for Super Bowl advertising and an 84% increase from 10 years ago. Between 2002 and 2011, 24/7 Wall St. estimates that companies spent a whopping $2.5 billion on Super Bowl advertising.

Twitter traffic was used by The Boston Globe’s Brandbowl to determine which ads were the most effective. The paper found that Doritos’ yearly Crash the Super Bowl contest – where amateur directors get to make their own commercials for the big game – garnered the most tweets and best reactions from viewers.

Priceline barely registered in Brandbowl’s data with only 30 tweets out of a sample of 400,000. Maybe the website named its own price for a marketing budget that was too low to produce anything good?

Number of viewers: 111+ million

Those in the know expected this year’s Super Bowl to be the most-watched sporting event in American history. What event did this year’s Super Bowl usurp from the ratings throne? The 2011 Super Bowl, of course! Suddenly the cost of running a commercial makes a little more sense!

Peak Tweets during the game: 12,233 a second

Super Bowl XLVI broke all Twitter records as fans sent more than 8,000 tweets per second during Madonna’s halftime show and a staggering 12,233 tweets per second during the game’s epic conclusion according to Digital Spy.

Viewers were divided on whether or not the halftime show itself was any good. The most common positive words about Madonna’s show included “great,” and “best,” while negative words included “hating,” “retire,” and “seriously.”

Number of apologies from the NFL and NBC: 1

It wouldn’t be a Super Bowl without controversy! British singer M.I.A. made an obscene gesture and appeared to sing, “I don’t give a (expletive)” during her portion of the halftime performance. The obscene gesture was impossible for viewers to miss, but the censors at NBC did just that, blurring the screen seconds after M.I.A. had already shocked her audience.

Better Luck Next Time NBC

NBC blurred a stage shot long after M.I.A. had already shocked audiences with an obscene gesture

“The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans,” said Brian McCarthy, spokesman for the NFL, which produced Madonna’s halftime show.

“The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show,” said NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey. “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”

Number of Wings eaten: 1.25 billion

More than 1.25 billion chicken wings were eaten on Sunday according to USA Today. That’s four apiece for every man, woman and child in America. If chicken wasn’t your thing, you might have ordered one of the 4.4 million pizzas that were delivered by the country’s major pizza chains on Sunday.

Final Score:  21-17

Wait, who won the game again? The Packers? The Penguins? I’m pretty sure it started with a P …

Superbowl Sunday: Epic Commercial Showdown!

3rd
Feb 2012

You may be pinching pennies these days, but this year’s Superbowl advertisers are going all out – spending up to a record $3.5 million for a 30 second spot – during Sunday’s showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Giants.

History suggests it’s money well spent. The Superbowl is consistently the most watched television event of the year with over 100 million Americans tuning in, so there’s a good chance you’ll be watching along with your friends, grandma, dog, and anything else with a set of eyes. It’s easy to see how a single advertisement can rocket a company into the American consciousness.

Heard of Apple? Its famous Orwellian 1984 commercial introduced the little-known computer manufacturer to the country and laid the groundwork for Apple’s reputation as a game-changing innovator. The commercial ran only once but was picked as TV Guide’s “Number One Greatest Commercial of All Time,” among many other awards.

Campaigns don’t necessarily have to be good to be successful – controversial works too! Groupon’s 2011 Superbowl ads appeared to make fun of Tibetan people, the destruction of Brazils’ Rainforest, and efforts to save endangered whales. The ads were actually trying to spoof celebrity-endorsed commercials, but that’s not how viewers saw it. The ads were hated and Groupon had to issue multiple statements and apologies in the days and weeks following the Superbowl. Despite the bad press, a record number of viewers signed up for Groupon and are now enjoying discounts on laser hair removal.

The Superbowl may take center stage for the ads, but many companies get the bulk of their views leading up to the big day on sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Doritos runs a yearly Crash the Superbowl contest which lets aspiring directors make their own ads. Every ad garners millions of views on YouTube, and judging from the comments left on the ads, viewers tend to be the immature 20 – 35 year old men that Doritos targets.

But big companies should take heed: the internet can be an unruly beast. Honda brought Ferris Bueller back from the 80s to hawk the 2012 CR-V, and many online critics have been anything but kind to Honda for using the beloved high-schooler to sell an SUV. Maybe Honda should have given Bueller a cooler car? A lot of the ad’s reception has been positive, and even the negative publicity could prove to be a good thing, much like GroupOn’s experience.

Even though companies spend millions on unique marketing ideas, certain trends always seem to emerge as each commercial airs. Three commercials have already been released featuring dogs as the star for this year. Our guess is that the ridiculous viewcount on every YouTube video starring a puppy was a sign that people love to watch cute animals doing cute things. It doesn’t take an ad-exec to figure that out.

So if you happen to be one of the many, many, many people who are tuning into this year’s epic showdown in Indianapolis, be sure to enjoy the commercials and watch history in the making as companies hit, miss, or miss so badly it’s a hit.

Valentine’s Day? Forget About It!

31st
Jan 2012

Anti Valentine'sJanuary is very nearly over, which means there are only 2 weeks to go until Valentine’s Day: the celebration of all things romantic. If you’re anything like me, listening to all your friends in relationships discuss their plans for the day can really put a downer on your mood.

Most of the time, I’m perfectly happy being single (until Mr Right comes along of course), yet this is the one time of year when I either feel like I’m seriously missing out, or I’m being penalised for not having an ‘other half’. After all, there’s no ‘I’m-Not-Currently-In-A-Relationship Day’ for the unattached to celebrate their freedom.

Having said that; those of you who feel like flaunting your singledom may want to consider celebrating Singles Awareness Day (or S.A.D for short), a witty alternative to Valentine’s. Also occurring on the 14th February, traditional activities involve giving gifts to yourself, attending parties with other singles, and wearing green (considered to be the opposite of red).

Over the past few years, the number of people who enjoy making an Anti-Valentine’s statement has grown considerably – which may be why a large number of card stores are starting to provide humorous alternative greetings. You’re sure to find something -whether it’s for the ex-special someone, a friend in need or simply for fun.

However, you may prefer to simply escape from all the madness entirely, and find somewhere that very definitely won’t be adorning the place with hearts and flowers. Across the globe, there are many different venues helpfully providing alternative Valentine’s Day ideas to those looking to escape.

Whether you’re a Valentine’s Grinch or just don’t want to constantly be reminded of what you haven’t got, we’ve compiled a great Top Ten list of the best Anti-Valentine’s escapes this year. After all, you won’t feel like your relationship status is constantly being highlighted this upcoming holiday if you’re not around to hear it!
