Oh boy, have I had quite the weekend. A friend of mine decided to throw a surprise party for her sister’s 21st which got completely out of hand. Here’s the thing, it was supposed to be low-cost party on a minimal budget – just a bunch of friends together with some fruit punch (and some added extras), bottles of wine, a buffet of finger food and just damn good company. If you’ve ever tried to organise a party and it’s got completely out of hand, you’ll know what’s coming next.
The problem is, my friend is a very “last minute kind of girl”. She spent a tonne on decorating the place with banners and balloons which blew half her budget before she even started! She then had little-to-nothing to spend on alcohol and food, which resulted in improvisation. You know, raiding the fridge freezer for previously frozen food, crushing up some popsicles to create our own fruit bowl, that kind of thing. Anyway, after all this, a bright spark came up with the idea of “inviting lots of people, telling them to bring their own alcohol, so we’ve got loads without spending anything!” – Bad idea. Our “surprise party with a bunch of friends” turned into a chaos of at least a hundred people in a small apartment (three-quarters of whom we didn’t know), smashed glasses, blazing music, food everywhere – and the poor birthday girl ended up having to join in clearing up afterwards. I’m sure we’ve all been through something like that once in a while but what I’ve learned from this is to definitely PLAN properly and be careful with who you invite! Parties are supposed to be fun, not a doorway to a bunch of cleaning and a whole load of stress!
